This year (so far) has been seeing a lot of new girl groups debut and I just wanted to summarize some of them a little bit and write my thoughts on them.

New girl-goup “Black Pearl”. I don’t know why they seem so appealing to me. Maybe its the maturity level that I feel from them, and the fact that I haven’t seen them in school girl uniform get-ups yet. Hope their talents measure up to the luxury of their name.

Cats. Seems like the typical “sexy, innocent, cute” girl groups out there. I don’t have a lot of information on them but I have a feeling their name is an acronym for something…I see Koreans have a thing for acronyms.

Baby Vox Rev. I guess people aren’t over the whole Baby Vox thing. Hope there’s something more to them too. They look promising enough.

Kara. Hmm…again the typical girl-group formula, but from a bunch of forum bunnies it seems they may have some talent, then again I don’t usually take the advice and reviews of fans because most of the time they are usually bias.

Wonder Girls…I don’t know why that name just irks me. Maybe its the lack of originality. I have yet to hear their music so for now I only know them as the group that always wore the same red school girl uniforms…Dream Concert and another show from what I remember.

SeeYa. Powerful voices and definately has the potential to get bigger. The real SG Wannabe female version, YG Wanna be actually spent time and money personally training these girls, so that has to count for something.

Time of Girls. And now the latest in the battle of girl groups SM’s new talent group. The name of the group is awkward, I actually preferred Super Girls. A lot of publicity and hype of a new group that has yet to show anything, but I hope they don’t disappoint their already-obssessive fans.
Girl-groups generally have a short-life span and are lucky if they are even remebered after their time. I’m more curious of who will make it or at least survive than who has what talent (if any). I mean look, my entry only lists some of the girl-groups out or going to debut and still there are companies that are still dishing out their own chickens into the ring, it’ll be a war to get any attention. And the fact that fanboys don’t exactly make the best fans compared to fangirls, making it harder for these girls because fangirls go ga-ga over boy groups and go crazy if even a rumor goes around that their “boyfriends” are dating another girl from a girl group. And then there’s the fact that girls are just naturally jealous of other girls; anti-fangirls would easily torment these girl-groups out of pure spite really.
How far these girls go, we’ll have to see. I know I will.

Though you should take my opinion with a grain of salt because I’m biased, I think you should check out Kara’s album. What I like about this group is that, like FinKL, they don’t have a “sexy” image like so many other Korean girl groups out there right now, but more of a casual or sporty one. Basically, they’re just being themselves. They’re down to earth, and their image isn’t at all forced. They have this strange charisma – the more you see them, the more you will like them. I think that once they start appearing on variety shows more often and start gaining a little more confidence, they’ll more than live up to the name of “FinKL 2″.
Though they’re young (Nicole is only 15!) and may seem cutesy in their promo pics, most of their album (except for If U Wanna) has a mature, yet laid-back, poppy feel to it. Their lead singer, Sung Hee, is definitely on a different vocal level than the others, but the other 3 are still much better than you might expect, and their songs are all pretty catchy.
To get a better idea of their vocal abilities, you might want to search YouTube for “kara radio show”.
Basically, if you liked FinKL, you’ll also like Kara because they were formed from the same principles.
As for the other groups, from what little I’ve heard of SeeYa, Cats, Baby Vox, and Wonder Girls, they’re actually all vocally pretty decent. It all comes down to what style of music and what kind of personalities/image you like. The main “rivalry” the media is focusing on is Kara vs. Wonder Girls (reminiscent of FinKL vs. SES back in the day). The other groups are pretty much just peripheral to the epic struggle. =P
You’re right about the difficulties that girl groups have in establishing fanbase. For instance, I’ve heard that small anti group made up of SS501 fans were bashing Kara on some website. And just because the members of SS501 bought the whole studio some lunch one day, and Kara happened to be part of the receiving group.
Sorry for the long comment! I just stumbled across this post while googling and wanted to promote Kara.

They looks silly and vapid, like most Korean pop acts. I prefer the Korean actors/actresses. Can’t stand the singers/groups/bands, what have you.

I think it’s true that girl groups have a difficult time becoming famous because the fan boys aren’t exactly as obsessed as the girls are… it’s a new era now so unless these groups have something unique and powerful.. they will die out. I think CSJh is one the those groups that are vocally talented and dance well and they seem to be getting more and more well known. Anyway…. just my 2 cents.
